A former educator who holds a master’s degree in education, Meredith Cooper Brown has taken her commitment to students from the classroom to the courtroom. Her practice at Burnette Shutt & McDaniel includes education law and employment law.
Meredith came to the firm while in law school, serving as a law clerk for more than two years. In that capacity, she helped draft federal court complaints covering ERISA employee benefits, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and various areas of employment law. She also assisted with Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaints.
Meredith also served the Hon. Michelle Hurley as an extern, assisting with administrative tasks and observing a variety of Family Court proceedings.
A native of Florence, Meredith attended the University of South Carolina School of Law. She was active in several organizations, including the Black Law Student Association and the Native American Student Law Association. She participated in the Student Mock Trial Bar, earning honors for Best Closing Argument as a second-year student. She also received the Sherod H. Eadon Scholarship, an award bestowed annually on a law student with an interest and ability in trial advocacy who displays academic excellence, integrity, and leadership.
Before law school, Meredith taught in Atlanta and New York in classrooms ranging from second grade to high school. She earned a master’s degree in elementary inclusive education from Columbia University and a bachelor’s in political science with a secondary education certificate from Spelman College. She joined the “Sweet” Mu Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., while studying at Spelman.
