Our LGBTQ+ Law Team has a proven track record in cases that change lives. Two of our founding partners, Malissa Burnette and Nekki Shutt, were part of the legal team that paved the way for marriage equality in South Carolina. We’ve successfully represented hard-working public employees fired because of their sexual orientation. We’ve made sure people can live authentically, by guiding them through gender-affirming name and gender marker changes so that their government documentation reflects their true identities.
From family law to employment law and beyond
The Burnett Shutt & McDaniel LGBTQ+ Law Team also is a fierce protector of families. Our family law attorneys help same-sex couples take the steps necessary to ensure that both legally are recognized as parents. We stand by same-sex couples who still must battle for retirement benefits, including military pensions and Social Security. Our family law attorneys also help unmarried couples, both same sex and opposite sex, make sure their rights are protected through domestic partnership agreements and other legal steps such as powers of attorney.
Burnette Shutt & McDaniel education law attorneys are well-versed in the highly technical language of school systems, allowing them to fight for the education rights of gender nonconforming students, whether that student is being bullied or needs representation in a disciplinary proceeding.
