Government Law
They say you can’t fight City Hall. But they’re wrong. At Burnette Shutt & McDaniel, our Government Law Team regularly does battle with City Hall, as well as with county governments, state and federal permitting agencies, professional licensing boards, and more.
Of course, sometimes it’s not necessarily a matter of doing battle, but simply one of making sure your environmental permitting application is in order. At times, this can involve filing paperwork and documentation with several local, state, and federal agencies. Burnette Shutt & McDaniels’ meticulous, attentive approach to environmental law helps businesses and individuals avoid frustrating, costly delays as projects progress.
Kathleen McDaniel, one of our founding partners and an experienced environmental attorney who’s received numerous peer awards for her work, offers clients a unique combination of legal skills, government experience, and a scientific background. She holds a master’s degree in forestry and a bachelor’s degree in aquaculture, fisheries, and wildlife. Additionally, she’s served on the Richland County Planning Commission and as a town attorney, positions that gave her insight into how agencies balance often-competing interests.
In other situations, a battle is necessary. The Burnette Shutt & McDaniel Government Law Team represents property owners in eminent domain cases, helping them protect their rights. Our attorneys help activist groups, community organizations, and individuals with concerns about how a project would hurt their neighborhood. We assist with Freedom of Information Act requests that give the public access to the government data and reports to which they’re entitled.
Deep experience in government law, from licensing to litigation
Our government law attorneys also represent doctors, nurses, psychologists, massage therapists, and other licensed professionals with matters before any of the nearly 50 boards under the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. The Burnette Shutt & McDaniel team has the experience to help at every stage of an investigation that puts a professional license and livelihood at risk.
Burnette Shutt & McDaniel’s experienced government law attorneys also stand ready to assist public-sector employees who have been wrongfully terminated, retaliated against for filing complaints, subjected to discrimination or harassment, and more.
Should a case require a lawsuit, our skilled litigators will stand by you. We have experience in all levels of South Carolina state courts as well as federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
