Burnette presents program to Legal Staff Professionals of the Midlands
Employment law guidance, as well as topics unique to law firms, were among the points attorney M. Malissa Burnette covered during a training program for the Legal Staff Professionals of the Midlands.
Burnette is a founding partner of Burnette Shutt & McDaniel. She frequently addresses Columbia professional groups and community organizations, offering updates on key areas of employment law that could apply to them. She also conducts continuing legal education programs for attorneys.
Burnette Shutt & McDaniel paralegal Traci Wolfe arranged last week’s presentation. She oversees educational programs for Legal Staff Professionals of the Midlands. The organization is a chapter of the National Association for Legal Assistants, a group that trains and certifies paralegals and legal secretaries. The national group also establishes ethics guidelines for members.
Burnette discussed issues such as unauthorized practice of law and salaried-exempt classifications under the Federal Labor Standards Act during her talk. A South Carolina Supreme Court Certified Specialist in Labor and Employment Law, Burnette’s practice includes workplace issues such as wage claims, discrimination and harassment. She also represents clients in civil rights cases.
