Burnette Shutt & McDaniel attorneys help author employer book for law firms

Attorneys go to law school, not business school for a reason: The law is where their interest lies. But eventually, many attorneys wind up being employers. What then?

Four Burnette Shutt & McDaniel attorneys have teamed up with others to update “Lawyers as Employers.” It’s the second edition of a guide written by SC Bar Labor and Employment Law Section members. The Burnette Shutt & McDaniel co-authors are M. Malissa Burnette, Grant Burnette LeFever, Sarah J.M. Cox, and Lydia Hendrix.

The volume offers insights into topics attorneys must address as owners of small law firms or as solo practitioners. It outlines the challenges of managing employees without the support of a full-on human resources department.

The topics covered are subjects Burnette Shutt & McDaniel attorneys handle every day on behalf of their clients. The areas can be confusing, though, to those practicing other areas of the law.

The 14 chapters include information about:

  • Wage, hour, and other pay issues.
  • Overtime regulations, including which employees can be exempt from overtime pay.
  • Employee benefits, including vacation, sick pay, and holidays.
  • Drug testing in the workplace.
  • Navigating unemployment and workers’ compensation claims
  • Preventing illegal discrimination and workplace harassment.
  • Creating employee handbooks.
  • Complying with federal and state immigration requirements.
  • Independent contractor vs. employee classifications.

The book is available for purchase and digital download at the Bar’s web site.
