Pavlicek to present CLE program on human trafficking and employment law
COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA – Jax Pavlicek will present a continuing legal education program about the interplay between human trafficking and employment laws.
The session, scheduled for May 13, is part of a South Carolina Bar Continuing Legal Education Seminar called “Recent Developments in Employment and Labor Law,” part of the annual, mid-year CLE put on by the SC Labor and Employment Law Section of the Bar. It will be held at the SC Bar Conference Center, 1501 Park St. in Columbia and also Webcast to Charleston and Greenville.
The day-long program will cover other topics such as blogging for lawyers and the ethical issues that can entail and tip credit wages in the food and beverage industry.
The issue of human trafficking is drawing increased attention statewide. When six people were indicted on charges of human trafficking in Columbia in January, it was the first case brought under stricter laws that went into effect in South Carolina in 2015.
A Clemson University study last summer that examined previous prostitution and kidnapping cases found that human trafficking could be more prevalent in the Palmetto State than previously thought. Labor trafficking, where people are forced or coerced into working, is another big part of the problem. A business that knowingly participates in labor trafficking can face fines, loss of license or both. Companies also could be subject to forfeiture of money, property or materials used in trafficking.
