Malissa Burnette named to SC Lawyers Weekly Power List

COLUMBIA, SC – Malissa Burnette is highlighted in the newest SC Lawyers Weekly Employment Law Power List, marking the third consecutive year a Burnette Shutt & McDaniel attorney has been included in the exclusive special section.

This year’s Power List recognizes only 10 employment-law attorneys statewide. Selection criteria include professional and community leadership, a record of success in cases, and respect of peers.

Throughout her illustrious career, Malissa has a long track record of standing up for the rights of others. A South Carolina Supreme Court-certified specialist in employment law for decades, Malissa has defended both workplace and civil rights.

She has consistently earned accolades in peer-reviewed national directories such as Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America, including multiple Lawyer of the Year honors for the Columbia area in Best Lawyers. The firm, co-founded by Malissa, Nekki Shutt and Kathleen McDaniel, also has perennially won acclaim in Best Law Firms for its work in employment law and civil rights law.

Malissa long has been a leader in the community and in moving law forward. She’s represented clients in cases that have changed lives for others, including litigation that paved the way for women to attend state-supported military academies and a case that allowed girls to play contact sports in South Carolina. She and Nekki Shutt also were part of the legal team that paved the way for marriage equality in South Carolina.

She, along with Kathleen McDaniel and Burnette Shutt & McDaniel attorney Grant Burnette LeFever, has been at the forefront of the fight to protect reproductive healthcare rights in South Carolina.
