Nekki Shutt named to SC Lawyers Weekly Power List

COLUMBIA, SC – The awards keep coming this month for Burnette Shutt & McDaniel co-founder, Nekki Shutt. The latest: A spot on the SC Lawyers Weekly Employment Law Power List.

The just-released list recognizes attorneys’ important work. Selection criteria include success in cases, leadership in the legal profession and in the community, and the respect of peers.

Earlier this month, Nekki was recognized in the peer-reviewed Best Lawyers in America in a diverse array of nine practice areas. Additionally, she was named Lawyer of the Year for the Columbia area for her work in Litigation – ERISA. Earlier this month, she was honored in Columbia Business Monthly’s Legal Elite of the Midlands edition for her work in Business Litigation and Employee Benefits.

Nekki devotes a significant portion of her practice to employee benefits issues under federal ERISA laws and similar state statutes. She fights for clients who are wrongly denied disability claims, life-insurance benefits or healthcare coverage.

“Nekki has always been on my personal Power List of outstanding employment law attorneys,” firm co-founder Malissa Burnette said. “It’s fitting that SC Lawyers Weekly is honoring her in this way.

A certified specialist in employment law since 2011, Nekki’s practice also includes other employment issues such as wrongful termination, discrimination and wage disputes. Additionally, she fights for clients in qui tam whistleblower actions and in civil rights cases. Nekki was part of the legal team, along with Burnette, in a landmark civil rights case that paved the way for marriage equality in South Carolina.

Her leadership roles in the legal profession include serving on the SC Bar Board of Directors.

She’s received numerous awards for her work, including annual recognition in Best Lawyers and in Super Lawyers. She also received the James Petigru Compleat Lawyer Award for Professional Excellence from the University of South Carolina School of Law Alumni Council.
