Guild honors Shutt, Burnette for work on landmark case
COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA – Burnette Shutt & McDaniel partners Nekki Shutt and M. Malissa Burnette were honored at the South Carolina Gay and Lesbian Business Guild Gala.
Shutt and Burnette are among five honorees. The Guild is recognizing them for their roles in leading the legal team that won same-sex couples the right to get married in South Carolina.
The two also were jointly honored by Columbia Business Monthly in its Top 50 Midlands Most Influential of 2015 list. That recognition, too, came after their work on landmark litigation paving the way for marriage equality in South Carolina.
Both Shutt and Burnette are certified South Carolina employment law specialists who represent clients in a range of discrimination and other cases. Their practices also include helping clients protect their rights under federal laws such as FMLA, ERISA and HIPAA.
The Guild was founded 22 years ago with a goal of encouraging business development and networking within the gay and lesbian community.
Other honorees at the June 18 gala include SC Equality Director of Operations Jennifer Tague and Latta Police Chief Crystal Moore, whom Burnette represented in a battle to get her job back. The discrimination case drew national attention.
TD Bank also is being recognized.
